Course 3: Paleoclimate I: Integrating modern processes data evaluation and models

1-6 April 2005: University of Southampton

Course 3 assesses key aspects of the modern climate system, their incorporation in computer models and their application in past time slices. Topics included are:

The carbon cycle

Time slice reconstructions observation (definition of time slices, temporal constraints, proxy selection) and model implications (model setup, model complexity versus efficiency and reliability)

Statistical analysis of raw data

Inter-hemispheric phase relationships

Land-ocean interaction (e.g. ice sheet dynamics and vegetation changes and their effects on the climate system)

Modes of the climate system

Proxy records: constraints for climate models (scales of data versus scales of models)
