Course 4: Paleoclimate II: orbital forcing data and models

September 2005, University of Bratislava

This course aims to present a fully integrated data and model based assessment of the processes controlling long-term climate change. It will include a field excursion to demonstrate the sedimentary record of orbitally forced climate changes. Topics included in the course are:

Direct and indirect dating of long-term climate records

Paleoclimate records (regional variation of dominant frequencies of climate change)

Role of low latitude versus high latitude change for Earth Climate (role of key regions of the climate system such as the monsoon regions and deep water formation) data and model perspective

Extreme climates (a key to forecast future climate?)

Inter-hemispheric phase relationships (assessing the lead-lag climate change relation of both hemispheres)

Marine-continental phase relationships

Time series analysis

Field excursion

Application deadline: 31 July
Decission on participation: ~2nd - 3rd week of August.
